The Lung Health Promotion Centre at The Alfred has been providing education for health professionals in lung health management since 1991.



The Centre's mission is to improve the care of people with respiratory illnesses by providing health professionals with the skills and knowledge to provide best practice management and care.



To deliver best practice, evidence based, holistic and contemporary education programs and resources to health care professionals working with people with respiratory conditions, to assist them to maintain optimal health outcomes and improve quality of life.  By doing this, we hope to effect improved patient management of respiratory conditions.



The services and programs provided by the Centre aim to be:

  • Responsive to current consumer and health professional needs

  • Innovative, practical, equitable and accessible

  • Evidence based, presented by experts in their field and not subjected to commercial influence or bias

  • Evaluated, reviewed and regularly updated to ensure currency

  • Delivered with passion, commitment and respect

  • Not subject to commercial influence or bias


Staff of the Centre have training and expertise in:

- health education
- health promotion
- clinical medicine and nursing
- course design and coordination
- presentation and education skills

- practical asthma and respiratory education in a variety of settings

We also work in collaboration with a range of health professionals with a wide range of clincal and academic expertise in lung disease management.


The Centre offers a range of services from scheduled programs for health professionals through to tailored education programs designed to meet the needs of specific groups.

We support a collaborative approach to health professional education, working with the Australian Practice Nurse Association (APNA), Divisions of General Practice, Universities, HARP projects and other integrated disease management projects.

We can provide advice on design, implementation and evaluation of projects and programs in the area of lung health and health education in general if required.
