Please note: This is a 5 day course run in two parts - 3 days (Part A) then 2 days (Part B). The two parts are run within 6 weeks of each other.

This comprehensive two part, 5 day course, is for health professionals currently working in or wishing to work in the area of respiratory medicine. The course takes a holistic approach to working with patients with respiratory illness to best manage their conditions.

Outline

This course takes a holistic approach to managing patients with respiratory illnesses. Topics covered include:

• Obstructive lung diseases
• Pulmonary artery hypertension
• Arterial blood gas analysis
• Auscultation skills - practical session
• Respiratory assessment skills
• Respiratory development & illnesses in Childhood
• Spirometry (visit to lung function lab)
• Infectious diseases of the lung
• Chest X-ray interpretation
• Non invasive ventilatory support
• Oxygen therapy
• Obstructive lung diseases - asthma and COPD
• Respiratory physiotherapy
• Pulmonary rehabilitation
• Artificial airways and intercostal catheters (practical session)
• Respiratory device use (practical session)
• Management of end stage lung disease
• Cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis
• Lung transplantation
• Chronic illness management
• Helping patients make positive change
• Psychological effects of chronic lung disease
• Sleep apnoea (visit to sleep lab)
• Lung cancer
• Smoking cessation
• Complementary therapies

Facilitators

Lectures will be delivered by a range of experts in the respiratory care field.

Assessment (optional)

Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the course.

Participants may choose to complete the following assessment:

• Two multi-choice/short answer questionnaires
• One case study

Participants who successfully complete the assessment will also be sent a Certificate of Successful Completion.
