Overview
Endorsed by the Australia and New Zealand Society of Respiratory Science (ANZSRS) and The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ), this extensive 2 day course is for health professionals who care for people with asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions.
Course Objective
To develop skills to enable particpants to perform spirometry to internationally recognised best practice.
Outline
The course combines practical and self assessment (50%) and lectures to maximise learning. Components of the course are:
- Introduction to spirometry - respiratory, physiology, history, parameters, international standards
- Purpose of spirometry - indications and contraindications to testing
- Test performance - instruction to patient, acceptability and reproducibility criteria, reversibility assessment, troubleshooting (equipment and patient)
- Selection of best test
- Quality assurance - equipment (calibration, quality control), staff, documentation, infection control
- Choosing a spirometer
- Predicted reference equations - normal range, selection, limitations
- Interpretation - diagnostic pattern, severity, reversibility, trending
