Background
The Lung Health Promotion Centre at The Alfred has been providing education for health professionals in lung health management since 1991.
Mission
Our mission is to be the centre of excellence in the provision of continuing education and support for health professionals enabling them to assist people with respiratory conditions to achieve and maintain optimal health.
Philosophy
The Centre is committed to providing accessible, evidence-based, holistic education and support for health professionals. We believe this approach is essential to maintaining quality health care education. This empowers health professionals to promote self-management principles for people with chronic respiratory illness resulting in improved health outcomes.
Principles
Services and programs provided by the Centre are undertaken in consultation with key stakeholders and relevant leading agencies and are:

responsive to current consumer needs;

practical, equitable and accessible;

evidendence based, presented by experts in their field and not subjected to commercial influence or bias;

evaluated, reviewed and regularly updated to ensure currency.
Staff
Staff of the Centre have training and expertise in:
- health education
- health promotion
- clinical medicine and nursing
- course design and coordination
- presentation and education skills, and
- practical asthma and respiratory education in a variety of settings
We also work in collaboration with a range of health professionals with a wide range of clincal and academic expertise in lung disease management.
Services
The Centre offers a range of services from scheduled programs for health professionals through to tailored education programs designed to mee the needs of specific groups.
We support a collaborative approach to health professional education, working with the Australian Asthma and Respiratory Educators Association (AAREA), Australian Practice Nurse Association (APNA), Divisions of General Practice, Universities, HARP projects and other integrated disease management projects.
We can provide advice on design, implementation and evaluation of projects and programs in the area of lung health and health education in general if required.
