Please note: This is a 5 day course run in two parts - 3 days (Part A) then 2 days (Part B). The two parts are run within 6 weeks of each other.
Overview
This comprehensive two part, 5 day course, is for health professionals currently working in or wishing to work in the area of respiratory medicine. It provides an opportunity to update and increase skills and theoretical knowledge in the area of respiratory care and holistic management of the person with the respiratory illness.
Outline
This course takes a holistic approach to managing patients with respiratory illnesses. Topics covered include:
- Anatomy & physiology of the lung
- Arterial blood gas interpretation
- Obstructive lung diseases
- Pulmonary artery hypertension
- Assessment & auscultation skills - practical session
- Respiratory assessment skills
- Respiratory development & illnesses in childhood
- Spirometry (visit to lung function lab)
- Infectious diseases of the lung
- Chest X-ray interpretation
- Non invasive ventilation
- Oxygen therapy
- Obstructive lung diseases - asthma and COPD
- Respiratory physiotherapy
- Pulmonary rehabilitation
- Artificial airways and intercostal catheters (practical session)
- Respiratory device use (practical session)
- Management of end stage lung disease
- Advance care planning
- Cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis
- Lung transplantation
- Chronic illness management
- Self management principles
- Psychological effects of chronic lung disease
- Sleep apnoea (visit to sleep lab)
- Lung cancer
- Smoking cessation
- Complementary therapies
Continuous Professional Developement (CPD) Hours
This course has 35 CPD hours
Facilitators
Lectures will be delivered by a range of experts in the respiratory care field.
Assessment (optional)
Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the course.
Participants may choose to complete the following assessment:
- Two multi-choice/short answer questionnaires
- One case study
Participants who successfully complete the assessment will also be sent a Certificate of Successful Completion.
